Welcome to beautiful Southern Maryland! Whether you’re visiting for the first time or have been a long-time resident,  you may be wondering what this region is known for. In this article, we talk about five fantastic things that make SOMD unique!

Let’s get exploring.

St. Mary’s City: Maryland’s First Colonial Settlement

Maryland’s first settlement was founded in the early 1630s and was a refuge for English Christians from European persecution. It was built in St. Mary’s City along the Chesapeake Bay. These settlers, which consisted of both Catholics and Protestants, arrived in America on the Ark and Dove.

Today, Historic St. Mary’s City (HSMC) is a living history museum with a reconstructed colonial town and many interactive exhibits. It’s a great place to learn about Maryland’s early history!

Civil War Sites

In Southern Maryland, you will find many sites that are part of the Civil War.  There is a lot to see and do from visiting battlefields, exploring museums, and even going on a self-guided tour! Here are a couple of sites we love:

Point Lookout State Park

Nestled between the Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac River, Point Lookout State Park continues to attract thousands of visitors every year. During the Civil War, this site served as a prison for over 50,000 Confederate soldiers. Today, visitors can learn about the area’s vivid history in the museum on-site as well as take in the beautiful views of the Chesapeake Bay.

Dr. Samuel A. Mudd House Museum

Who was Dr. Samuel A. Mudd? He was the doctor who treated the infamous John Wilkes Booth’s broken leg the morning after President Lincoln was assassinated. Mudd’s home rested on what his father named the St. Catherine plantation in Waldorf, MD. Today, it serves as a museum for visitors to learn more about one of the most infamous events in American history.

Dozens of Activities on The Chesapeake Bay

Drum Point Lighthouse

Drum Point is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is located in Solomons, MD. Drum Point takes us back to the early twentieth century when over 40 lighthouses were stationed along the Chesapeake Bay. Today, this lighthouse is only one of the three remaining! It is open year-round for visitors to tour.

Cove Point Lighthouse

Cove Point Lighthouse sits along the Chesapeake Bay in Lusby, Maryland, and offers stunning views of Calvert Cliffs. You can also rent out the keeper’s home for a special event!
